I have a carpeted, rectangular living room.

Anywhere – out of sight works, like behind a chair. Subwoofers generate only very low frequencies which are not directional – you can’t determine where they are coming from. Higher frequencies are directional – you can tell where the sound is coming from, so their placement does matter.

the best place to put a sub-woofer is on the floor, because then the acoustics are better… or as close as possible to a neighbour’s wall

Actually, it doesn’t really matter that much. Subwoofers are made to send vibrations throughout the entire room. The only real necessity is that the subwoofer is put on the floor. If it is put on top of anything, the vibrations will be absorbed, and it won’t have the same effect. Hope this was helpful

wherever it’s fit to the design.
cause it doesn’t really matter.

i put mine in the corner, it trembles off the walls and has greater effects rather than out in the open, also place it on the floor as the vibrations hit the floor giving better results.

In general, the best place to put a subwoofer is in one of the front corners behind the speakers. This uses the walls as an infinite baffle and allows the low frequency waves to generate towards the listener. Two subs, one in each front corner is ideal. Just my preference.

One trick I read about is to temporarily put the sub woofer in your listening position, and put on a test tone or music with some bass.
Then get on the floor and listen in the places where you are thinking of putting the subwoofer. The location where the bass sounds the best is where you should put the subwoofer for the best sound in your listening position.

There are some rules of thumb, but usually it comes down to experimenting with different positions within the room to try and find a tight, smooth, not boomy, bass from your desired sitting position.

I hide mine. The low frequency is non directional , meaning you can not identify where the sound is coming from.
What do you mean sub woofer? Dont you mean sub WOOFERS. Really want to add to your sound, try two, across from each other. You’ll never go back

anywhere (you heard it from a audiobuff). Woofers placement really does not matter as the sound travels flat, and the octane and sound pressure are way towards the lowest frequencies. But since sub-bass frequencies are particularly sensitive to room location (due to room resonance and reverberation ‘modes’), the best position of the subwoofer is not likely to be where the “satellite” speakers are located. The placement of the subwoofers should not be restricted to the ‘lifestyle’ placement.
